Start Training! - Foundation Basics
Foundation Basics
What do all successful athletes and sports teams have in common? They do the basics consistently well, if not perfectly!
Dog training is no different. Laying a strong foundation with your puppy is the key to success! Train the foundation basics well – and the rest will come!
So, what are the basic commands that you will be teaching your puppy?
Foundation Training – The Essential Commands
- Recall (come, here, etc)
- Sit (also means Stay)
- Down/Halt/Platz (also means Stay)
- Fetch/Bring/Apport
- Heel
- Release “command”
Most of the above should be taught with:
- Voice command
- Hand signal/body language
- Whistle command
There are many training programmes and many different appoaches to training. It is up to you to decide what approach will work best for you. It is a good idea to go to one of the clubs, or a trainer, to observe and learn so that you can make informed decisions.
