Essential Equipment and Training Aids
What you need! Essential Equipment:
You don’t need a lot of equipment, but you do need some. It is, however, worth investing in appropriate, high quality equipment!
- Collar(s)
- Leads (short and long (checkcord))
- Whistle
- Dummies
- Game bag or training vest
- Crate for home and transport
- Not essential but really good to have!…
- Placeboard and/or shaping box
- Clicker, if you intend to use one
- Starting pistol
- Dummy launcher
- Pigeon release launcher
There are local sources for some of these items, but often one has to import a few things. Ask your club about the best options!
Of most importance is to have a proper collar for use in training. This will normally be a contractable or slip type collar that will adjust as your puppy grows. A leather lead is the best as it is soft on the hands and rolls up into a small package to fit easily into your pocket.
A selection of dummies is a must. Have at least 3 different kinds. To start, at least one must be of an appropriate size for a puppy. If you cannot find one easily, paint rollers work well and dogs and puppies tend to like them.
A place to put your equipment is advised! A vest or game bag works well.
Crate_Training (>>read this article!) is a must! Your puppy must learn to be crated in the home and for transport. A crate aids house training, teaches the puppy self-control, keeps him out of trouble and is a safe space when he needs to sleep, and ensures that when he travels he is safe… and you can stay in almost any place since your pup has his own portable kennel.
Ultimately you may wish to purchase a gps tracking collar. The safety of your dog is paramount, and knowing where you dog is at may save its life one day.
